August has an unfair reputation in Paris. Yes, many Parisians leave the city, but in return you get a more relaxed international crowd, shorter museum queues and an outdoor programme that only exists in summer. Cinema under the stars, festivals on the grass, opera in the gardens and concerts in the parks: August 2026 reveals a side of Paris that can only be experienced at this time of year. From Hôtel R de Paris in the 9th arrondissement, most of these outings are quick to reach by metro or on foot.

Rock en Seine — 26 to 30 August 2026

The summer’s headline music event around Paris is back: Rock en Seine returns from Wednesday 26 to Sunday 30 August 2026 at the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud. The 2026 edition features an outstanding line-up including The Cure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Franz Ferdinand and Deftones among the announced headliners. Five days of concerts in an exceptional green setting on the edge of Paris. You can get there via RER C from Saint-Lazare (towards Versailles, stop Saint-Cloud). Day passes and festival passes are available on the official website.

Jazz à la Villette — late August

Jazz à la Villette takes over the Grande Halle de La Villette, the Cité de la Musique and the Philharmonie de Paris at the end of every summer. The 2026 edition is expected to run for about a week between late August and early September, with an eclectic programme bringing together major names in contemporary jazz. For enthusiasts, it remains one of the season’s most eagerly awaited annual events. Programme and tickets are usually available on the Philharmonie website.

Paris Plages and evenings along the Seine

Paris Plages continues until the end of August along the Seine and the Canal de l'Arsenal. Sand, deckchairs, free sporting activities and open-air concerts on the riverbanks make it one of the city’s best summer options if you want to enjoy Paris without spending much. Warm evenings by the water are among the most authentic Parisian experiences of the season. Canal Saint-Martin, about a 20-minute walk from the hotel, offers a more local and less touristy atmosphere.

Open-air cinema and summer culture

Open-air cinema at La Villette — until mid-August

The Prairie de La Villette hosts its famous open-air cinema festival every summer, usually until around mid-August. Screenings take place on Europe’s largest inflatable screen, with classic films and free admission: bring a blanket and settle in on the grass. The programme is available on La Villette’s official website (metro line 5, Porte de Pantin).

Arènes Lyriques de Montmartre — until mid-August

In the garden of the Arènes de Montmartre, young opera singers perform lyric evenings at dusk from late July to mid-August. The format is intimate and far from the solemn atmosphere of major opera houses, making it ideal if you want to discover opera in a leafy setting. It is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel heading up towards Montmartre.

Classique au Vert at Parc Floral

The Parc Floral de Paris in the Bois de Vincennes hosts its Classique au Vert festival on weekends from late June to early September, with open-air classical music concerts in the gardens. Prices remain very accessible and the setting is wonderfully green.

Sports events in August

August 2026 also brings the European Swimming Championships to the Centre Aquatique Olympique in Saint-Denis, one of the venues inherited from the Paris 2024 Games. Open-water swimming, artistic swimming, diving and racing events make it a great chance to watch elite sport in an impressive venue. The site is accessible via RER D from Gare du Nord, reachable on metro line 12 from Saint-Lazare.

Museums and exhibitions in August

  • Beyond the Streets at La Villette — until 30 August: one of the summer’s major street-art exhibitions, with its final days at the end of the month.
  • Paris’s major museums (the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Musée de l'Homme) — queues are noticeably shorter on weekdays in August, especially at the beginning of the month.

In the hotel’s neighbourhood in August

In August, the 9th arrondissement feels calmer, which is often exactly what travellers want. A few useful landmarks from Hôtel R de Paris:

  • Rue des Martyrs remains one of the liveliest streets in the neighbourhood, even in August. Cheesemongers, artisan bakeries and café terraces keep local life going.
  • The Musée de la Vie Romantique (16 rue Chaptal, 12 minutes on foot) offers free permanent collections and a tea room in its covered garden, making it one of the district’s most pleasant spots for a midday break.

After a day of festivals or walks, the hotel’s Fitness & Spa area — with sauna, hammam and wellness facilities — is available to guests and is a very pleasant way to end a summer day.
