Five minutes on foot from Hôtel R de Paris, on rue d’Amsterdam, Chonbou is one of the 9th arrondissement’s reliably good tables — discreet, solid and regularly mentioned by local guides. Behind this name, borrowed from French backslang for “mouth”, lies a dual identity: a creative French restaurant and a characterful wine shop, with 350 carefully selected labels. It is the kind of address worth noting as soon as you check in.
Arthur in the kitchen: fresh produce, precise technique
In the kitchen, chef Arthur is at the helm. His short, well-controlled menu changes with the seasons and never tries too hard — which is exactly why it works. Expect classically rooted dishes revisited with real technical precision: a layered pressed yellow chicken and artichoke, poultry mousseline and braised morels; a flame-seared mackerel with fermented bergamot and leche de tigre; or a South-West duck breast with braised pak choi and passion-fruit gel. The ingredients are straightforward, the pairings inventive without ever feeling showy.
The lunch menus (starter-main at €34, main-dessert at €32, full menu at €42) make Chonbou an excellent choice for a carefully cooked lunch without overspending. In the evening, the menu expands slightly and the mood becomes calmer — ideal for a romantic dinner or a meal with friends in an elegant, welcoming setting.
